2026 Hooked on the Law Scholarship

Fishing regulations protect our waterways, sustain fish populations, and preserve our environment for generations to come. But what happens when a fishing violation becomes more than just a fine? The 2026 Hooked on the Law Scholarship challenges students to explore the complex relationship between fishing laws, conservation goals, and criminal enforcement.

Keys Criminal Defense, PLLC is proud to offer this $1,000 scholarship to a student who shares a personal story that got them ‘hooked’ on pursuing a career in law. Preference will be given to those whose story includes the examination of current fishing regulations and the balance between protecting the environment and ensuring fair, proportional penalties. Whether you’re an avid angler, a law student, or simply passionate about environmental justice, this is your chance to combine your advocacy with academic achievement.

Award Amount: $1,000

Eligibility

• Open to current high school seniors, vocational students, college students, or graduate students who are legal U.S. residents in any of the 50 states or D.C.
• Applicants must be enrolled in a vocational program or a two- to four-year post-secondary institution.
• A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required, along with good academic standing.
• Employees of Keys Criminal Defense, PLLC, their immediate families, and members of their households are not eligible.

Application Requirements

• Complete the online application form.
• Submit a 750–1,000-word essay in response to the following question: What inspired your passion for law, especially as it relates to environmental protection, fishing regulations, or justice? How will you use your legal knowledge to promote fairness and protect natural resources? Share a personal story that first ‘hooked’ you on pursuing a career in law.
• Provide a professional résumé outlining academic and professional experience.
• Submit a transcript from your current school. (First-year college students or transfer students may include both their current unofficial transcript and their most recent official transcript from their previous institution.) High school students can submit proof of acceptance to their college or university.
• Preference will be given to applicants from or attending school in Florida.

The recipient of the 2026 Hooked on the Law Scholarship will be chosen during the month following the scholarship deadline of May 30, 2026.
